Caryl Lewis is the author of Martha, Jack and Shanco, a Welsh-language novel about loneliness in rural west Wales.
It was published in English, in a translation by Gwen Davies, by Parthian in 2007.
Lewis' new novel, Y Gemydd (The Jeweller) has been published in Welsh by Y Lolfa. Davies is currently working on the English translation.
The novel is set away from a farm this time, in the world of house clearances and a jeweller’s stall in a county town market hall which is about to be demolished. Themes of identity, roots and alienation combine with beautiful imagery, symbolism and use of language.
And one of the characters is a monkey.

Gwen Davies is translator of Martha, Jack & Shanco, and co-translator, with the author, of Seren Wyn ar Gefndir Gwyn (White Star, both published by Parthian. She works as a fiction and creative editor, and has published on Welsh writing in English and Welsh-language literature in anthologies and magazines.
